Ecommerce personalization statistics

What makes an experience relevant. Where better customer data helps.

Personalization has to connect reliable product and customer context with a useful recommendation. The evidence separates capability and consumer expectations from a historical controlled recommender result.

Key takeaways

  1. Begin with a usable customer signal. In Salesforce's cross-industry survey, 98% of marketers reported personalization barriers and only 51% had complete commerce-data access. [1]

  2. Choose recommendations that answer the next shopping question. Pinterest's historical ItemSage experiment measured a 6.85% relative GMV-per-user lift on Closeup. [6]

  3. Respect the preference the customer actually shared. In Attentive's subscriber survey, 48% associated personalized marketing with using their stated preferences. [7]

Same experiment as the GMV finding. These are linked outcomes, not independent corroborating studies.

Start with reliable context, not more variations

Record the inputs a rule needs, who supplies them and when they expire. Product availability and the selected variant should be current at the point of use. A preference supplied by a customer has a different origin from an inference based on browsing.

Match the personalization tactic to available information

Choose the input and missing-data behavior together. The following planning map distinguishes an item recommendation from a change to message timing or creative.

TacticInputFallback
Item recommendationsRelevant behavior and eligible stockAvailable category selection
Message timingSubscribed channel and event stateSuppress an ineligible trigger
Visual variantThe selected product and permitted contextAccurate general product view
Preference-based offerPreferences the customer suppliedGeneral offer with the same terms

Measure one personalization decision at a time

Assign eligible visitors to a stable control where practical. Define purchase, contribution and return outcomes before launch, and keep product availability and the observation window consistent.

In the video trial, purchase histories informed the message and human marketers controlled scripts. Comparing personalized video with generic video changes relevance as well as production. Comparing it with personalized images also changes format. Select the baseline that isolates the decision your store is making.

Specify a preference-based garment recommendation

Use a style preference the shopper supplied and current eligible stock to choose the recommendation. Test that ranking against a general in-stock category selection. Keep price, offer and product photography unchanged so the result answers a recommendation question.

A visual-context test is different: keep the recommended item fixed and compare a general product scene with a context-specific scene. Fotogenic AI can supply the creative assets; the store or messaging system owns audience selection, consent and delivery.

DecisionSpecification
InputsCustomer-supplied style preference and current product/variant availability
FallbackGeneral in-stock selection when a preference is missing or the chosen item is unavailable
AssignmentKeep each eligible shopper in a stable treatment or control

FAQ

Questions about the research

A historical Pinterest ItemSage A/B experiment on its Closeup surface reported 6.85% higher GMV per user and 5.13% more checkouts per user versus its prior recommendation baseline. That is controlled evidence for a particular recommender change, rather than a universal merchant uplift. Evaluate relevance, product availability and contribution after costs in your own rule test.
